An international sporting organization has suspended Serbian judo world champion Nemanja Majdov for five months for making the sign of the cross at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. The International Judo Federation defended its decision, citing violations of its code of conduct related to displaying religious symbols during competition.
The Disciplinary Commission of the Federation stated that Majdov’s suspension was due to him displaying a religious sign when entering the field of play and refusing to bow to his opponent at the end of the contest, both of which are against the organization’s rules. Additionally, Majdov removed his judogi (uniform) on the field of play, further complicating the situation.
In response to the suspension, Majdov expressed disappointment but remained steadfast in his faith, emphasizing that his commitment to his religion and sport would not change. The athlete has faced similar incidents in the past, with warnings in April 2018 and February 2022 regarding making the sign of the cross.
The IJF emphasized that its rules regarding the display of religious or other signs are meant to maintain neutrality in the field of play, ensuring that all athletes are treated equally regardless of culture, nationality, religion, or orientation. The organization views respect and proper behavior as fundamental elements of the sport of judo.
Despite the suspension, Majdov remains unapologetic and plans to return to judo next year. He reflected on his successful career, expressing gratitude for the opportunities he has had in the sport and the sacrifices his family made to support him.
Majdov’s case highlights the intersection of sports and religion, raising questions about the boundaries of religious expression in athletic competitions. While athletes are expected to adhere to the rules and regulations of their respective sports, conflicts may arise when personal beliefs come into play. It is essential for sporting organizations to navigate these issues sensitively and maintain a balance between upholding the integrity of the sport and respecting athletes’ religious freedoms.
