A man with an ax caused a large-scale operation in Neubrandenburg in September 2022. He had attacked an acquaintance and fled across town. The attacker has now been sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) – Because of an ax attack on an acquaintance in Neubrandenburg, the regional court has sentenced a 43-year-old man to five and a half years in prison. The convict was found guilty of attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm, a court spokesman said on Tuesday. Contrary to plans to the contrary, the verdict was already pronounced on March 2nd. This was originally planned for March 10th.

The convict and the injured person came to Germany from Syria in 2015 as refugees. “We were good friends before, I never thought it would get that far,” the victim said as a witness. The convict did not get along in Germany, did not learn the language and blamed him for his problems. In September 2022, the 43-year-old drove to the apartment building where the attacked man lived with his girlfriend. When the victim opened the front door downstairs, he was attacked with an ax.

“He cursed me and my family too,” said the victim. The 26-year-old fought this off with his arms and suffered injuries. His girlfriend opened the front door so he could escape into the house. Witnesses watched the incident from balconies. The case had caused a stir because the perpetrator was cycling through Neubrandenburg with the ax at the time. The police had publicly warned against him, several helicopters were in use.

According to the injured party, the convict is said to have said in advance that he could not tolerate the fact that his compatriot lived with an unmarried woman and that there was alcohol in the house. With the verdict, the regional court largely followed the request of the public prosecutor, who had demanded more than six years in prison. The defense had asked for a lesser sentence. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
