Sternberg (dpa/mv) – In Sternberg (Ludwigslust-Parchim), people are called on Sunday (8 a.m.) to vote for the first full-time mayor in 2023 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There, the 49-year-old Kathrin Haese (SPD) wants to replace the 63-year-old incumbent Armin Taubenheim (CDU), who has been in office since 2016. Around 3,500 people are entitled to vote. Around a fifth of these have already voted by mail.

In Sternberg, where the state parliament of Mecklenburg met for centuries, the CDU has been at the top of the administration since 1990. In the city council, the CDU has seven, SPD four, Linke two and AfD one deputy, plus an individual applicant. Further mayoral elections are due in the northeast in 2023: in Röbel on March 12, in Malchow and Strasburg on April 23 and in Schwerin on June 4.
