Landshut (dpa / lby) – Cases of bird flu have been detected in the districts of Landshut and Bamberg. As the Landshut district office announced on Tuesday, the bird flu virus was found in a poultry farm in the municipality of Ergoldsbach. Most of the ducks and chickens died. A protection zone has been set up around the company to prevent the spread. The office points out that the animals of an infected herd must be culled.

The Bamberg district office said on Tuesday that avian influenza had broken out in a small chicken farm in the western district. The animals of the hobby chicken keeper died within a very short time. Since it was a stock of fewer than 50 animals, “no protection and surveillance zone with more extensive measures and restrictions” had to be identified.

Most recently, bird flu cases were detected in Munich and in the districts of Schwandorf and Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge.

Also known as bird flu, avian influenza is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated materials. There is no known infection of people in this way in Germany. However, dead birds should not be touched. Several dead or sick animals in one place should be reported to the veterinary office.
