Oberstdorf (dpa / lby) – After the unauthorized dredging work on the protected Rappenalpbach in the Allgäu near Oberstdorf, dams on the river are opened at several points. A spokeswoman for the Oberallgäu district office said on Friday that large amounts of water caused by heavy rain or snowmelt could be directed to flood plains. The measures should be completed during the day. First, the Bavarian radio had reported.

In addition, according to the spokeswoman, drones have measured the river in the past few days to document the damage caused by the dredging work. A demolition to restore the old course of the river has not yet begun.

An alpine cooperative had massively changed the strictly protected Rappenalpbach over a length of 1.6 kilometers with an excavator. The district authority came under criticism because they had discussed certain work on the body of water with the cooperative. However, the authority emphasizes that the construction work was then much more extensive than agreed.
