Embroiled in a scandal after forcibly kissing Jennifer Hermoso during Spain’s World Cup title, Luis Rubiales will now have to answer to justice. The Spanish public prosecutor’s office announced on Monday, August 28, to open a preliminary investigation for alleged “sexual assault”.
The prosecution will investigate “facts which could constitute an offense of sexual assault”, the public prosecutor said in a press release, inviting Jennifer Hermoso to contact the prosecution of the National Audience “in a period of fifteen days” in order to be “informed of his rights as a victim” and to “file a complaint” if necessary.
The presidents of the regional federations, summoned by the interim president of the Spanish Football Federation, demanded Monday evening the immediate resignation of Luis Rubiales. “After recent events and unacceptable behavior that have seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the presidents ask Luis Rubiales to immediately submit his resignation as president of the RFEF,” reads a statement from the federation.
