Rheinfelden (dpa / lsw) – A man was caught by customs officers on the Autobahn 861 in the Lörrach district with quite unusual “smuggled goods”: he had loaded a gondola from a Swiss mountain railway on his car trailer. However, he had not registered with customs and paid import duties, as the main customs office announced on Tuesday. According to his own statements, he had bought the 600-euro gondola in Switzerland as a birthday present for his girlfriend. After the customs officers had collected the import duties of around 200 euros in the case at the end of May, the man was allowed to continue with his gift.
Goods from non-EU member states may only be brought into Germany duty-free up to certain quantities and values.
