Baden-Württemberg: Freiburg creates more space for cyclists and pedestrians

Freiburg (dpa/lsw) – Wider cycle paths, safer crossings: The city of Freiburg has invested 16 million euros to curb car traffic and thus offer cyclists and pedestrians more space. The program, which has been running for a year and a half, is unprecedented in the Black Forest metropolis and is also looking for its own nationwide, said Mayor Martin Horn (independent) on Thursday.

Four fifths of the 30 individual projects have already been completed. The planners redivided the street space in several places in the city: lanes for motorists were converted into wide cycle lanes, which also gave pedestrians more space. Along the main traffic routes, construction workers colored cycle paths red to ensure greater safety. Paths that had turned into “moguls” due to tree roots have been repaired.

Freiburg likes to call itself “Green City”. From the point of view of the city leaders, the ambitious sustainability policy has received worldwide attention and recognition.
