Aschau im Chiemgau (dpa / lby) – With refugees in the trunk, a suspected smuggler had a lengthy chase with the police in Upper Bavaria. The man drove up to 220 kilometers per hour on the Autobahn 93 and 8 in Aschau im Chiemgau on Tuesday, the federal police said on Wednesday. Before that, he had broken through a checkpoint at the border crossing near Kiefersfelden.

Several patrols followed the getaway car, which contained six Turkish refugees between the ages of 19 and 50, for around 40 kilometers – two of them unsecured in the trunk. According to the federal police, the driver risked the life and limb of the people he was transporting. On the run, he reportedly broke through a construction site barrier, carried out several high-risk overtaking maneuvers and raced into a town at 120 kilometers per hour.

A patrol was able to stop the vehicle on a side street. When he was arrested, the suspected smuggler bit an officer’s hand. The police officer was later treated at a hospital for the bleeding wound.

The driver was taken into custody. The six men in the car were reported because of their illegal attempt to enter the country. “You will probably have to leave the country again soon after the police measures have been completed,” said the Rosenheim Federal Police Inspectorate.
