BASF and Exterra Carbon Solutions have teamed up to explore the possibilities of deploying a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Quebec, Canada. This collaboration aims to accelerate the decarbonization of Quebec’s industrial sector, focusing on hard-to-abate industries like cement, steel, gas-to-power, and waste-to-energy sectors. These industries are responsible for nearly 20 percent of global CO2 emissions, according to the International Energy Agency.
The partnership between BASF and Exterra combines BASF’s OASEĀ® gas treatment technology with Exterra’s Reactive Oxide to Carbonate System (ROC) to pioneer an integrated carbon capture and mineralization system. BASF’s gas treatment solutions will capture CO2 emissions from industrial processes, while Exterra’s ROC technology will convert the captured CO2 into a stable mineral form for permanent storage. This innovative approach ensures transparency, safety, and rapid scalability in carbon management.
