Unicef Executive Director Catherine Russell was injured in a car accident in Egypt yesterday while traveling to the Gaza Strip and had to postpone a visit to Israel due to her injuries, a Unicef spokesperson said on Wednesday.

“While heading to Rafah, we believe the car hit or tried to avoid a large pothole that caused the car to go through a deep ditch and roll to the side,” UNICEF media chief Kurtis Cooper said. adding that Russell “experienced significant bruising and is in considerable discomfort, but his injuries are not considered serious.”

They further added that Russell continued his visit to Gaza and then doctors determined that he needed more care, so he postponed the rest of his visit to the region, which included Israel, where he hoped to meet with the families of the kidnapped children.
