Biblis/Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) – According to the Hessian Greens parliamentary group, the demolition of the first of four cooling towers of the decommissioned Biblis nuclear power plant is a symbol of wrong energy policy. “The fact that this was successful is to the credit of the anti-nuclear movement,” said Martina Feldmayer, climate and environmental protection expert from the state parliamentary group, on Thursday in Wiesbaden. “The rejection of nuclear power is part of the green DNA.” The energy transition is the only solution for a sustainable and secure energy supply.
The nuclear power plant was shut down after Germany’s nuclear phase-out as a result of the Fukushima disaster in 2011. The facility has been demolished since 2017. The two pressurized water reactors in Block A and Block B with their four cooling towers went into operation in 1974 and 1976 respectively. The tower demolished on Thursday belonged to Block A. Its “twin” is expected to share the same fate in February. The towers of Block B are scheduled to be demolished next year.
