Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – In Frankfurt, a large-scale construction project by Deutsche Bahn is entering the next round. The second construction phase for the “Frankfurt Stadium node” was heralded, which should also lead to fewer delays in rail traffic nationwide. “Six instead of four tracks and a new Main Bridge create space for around 40 percent more trains approaching the main station,” said Bahn Infrastructure Board Member Berthold Huber at the official groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday.
Thanks to the “Frankfurt Stadium node”, the S-Bahn, long-distance and regional trains will be able to run separately from each other in the future. Thanks to the three-stage construction project, access routes to the main station are to be expanded and bottlenecks avoided. According to the information, the railways, the federal government and the state of Hesse are investing a total of around 440 million euros in the project. “The investment backlog on the rails can be felt every day, but it’s finally being reduced,” said Hesse’s Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens).
The first construction phase was completed in early 2015. In the second phase that is now beginning, the route will be expanded between the Frankfurt Stadium and the main train station, and in a third phase the expansion between the Frankfurt Stadium and Zeppelinheim.
