Hesse: nuclear waste: landfill operator can contest the decision

Darmstadt/Büttelborn (dpa/lhe) – In the dispute over 3,200 tons of slightly contaminated construction waste from the demolition of the Biblis nuclear power plant, the landfill operator has the option of an action for annulment. This was announced by the Darmstadt Regional Council at the request of the German Press Agency. The regional council and the Hessian Ministry of the Environment announced on November 16 that the rubble from the Bergstraße district should be taken to the landfill in Büttelborn in the Groß-Gerau district. Südhessische Abfallverwertungs GmbH Savag and its shareholders now have until mid-December to comment on these plans. According to the Mayor of Büttelborn, Marcus Merkel (SPD), they don’t want the garbage there.

According to earlier information from the Ministry of the Environment, none of the more than 200 landfills requested nationwide had declared themselves ready for disposal. After Germany’s nuclear phase-out in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in 2011, the Biblis power plant was also shut down shortly thereafter. The facility has been demolished since 2017.
