A section of the M42 will be closed for three full weekends to allow for HS2 construction to take place, causing potential disruptions for drivers. The closure will be between junctions 6 and 7/7a, near Birmingham Business Park, Birmingham NEC, and Birmingham Airport. This closure is necessary for the installation of a ‘twin box’ structure to carry the high-speed railway line over the motorway.

The closures are scheduled to take place from 9pm on Friday, November 1 until 5am on Monday, December 16, covering three weekends. During this time, the road will be closed to create a safe working area in the central reservation for the construction of the box structure. A 50mph speed limit will be enforced once the structure is in place.

Doug Barnett, Senior Project Manager for HS2 Ltd, emphasized the importance of establishing a safe environment for both workers and road users before beginning construction. He also mentioned the removal of pre-existing concrete foundations and the installation of underground ducting as part of the preparation work.

National Highways is working closely with HS2 to minimize the impact on roads and road users during the closures. A spokesperson advised drivers to avoid the area if possible and to follow the signed diversion routes. For northbound traffic, the diversion route will take drivers along the A45 to rejoin the M42 at junction 9. Southbound traffic will be directed to take the M6 southbound and then rejoin the M42 at junction 6.

While these closures may cause delays, it is necessary to ensure the safety of both workers and road users during the construction process. Your patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated as we work to complete this important project.
