It seems as if some Germans long back to the Stone Age. He removes the lawn and flower bed from his front yard and instead dumps large areas of gravel and debris over his clod. He tears down hedges and puts up wire cages in their place, which he fills with granite and greywacke. The walls in the hardware store are called gabions. The satirist Dietmar Wischmeyer calls them “vertical gravel”. Or “Taliban hedges” because they look “like Kunduz” to him.
