Schwerin (dpa/mv) – The state government wants to support the municipalities in implementing the desired heat transition towards the use of renewable energy sources. Energy Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) announced on Thursday in the Schwerin state parliament that talks with the municipal associations would take place at the beginning of 2023. “We will only achieve our climate goals if we also shape a heating transition,” emphasized the minister. He pointed out that some federal states had anchored the obligation for municipal heating plans in their climate protection laws. Such a law should be in place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania by the end of 2023.

Green MP Hannes Damm, who initiated the debate on the subject with his motion, urged action, after all, around half of the pollutant emissions result from heat generation. Damm pointed out that the federal government had launched two major funding programs to accelerate the heat transition in the municipalities. Planning to set up “efficient heating networks” in the municipalities would be funded with 90 to 100 percent.

“Never before have the federal funding conditions for the conversion to renewable heat been better than they are now. That is why the state must take action and support the municipalities with the application process,” warned Damm. If only half of the residents of a community have their own heat pump, it is hardly worth implementing community solutions, he said. Those who invest in climate protection today ensure regional added value, relief for public budgets and reliable and affordable heat.
