Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Flying sparks cause further crop fires in West Mecklenburg

Ludwigslust (dpa / mv) – In West Mecklenburg there were further fires during the grain harvest. As a police spokesman said on Tuesday, a barley field burned near Kreien and straw on a mown field near Boizenburg (Ludwigslust-Parchim). At Boizenburg, 10,000 square meters were affected on Monday, at Kreien around 4,000 square meters.

In both cases, stones had gotten caught in the harvesters, sending sparks setting fire to the dry grain. The combine harvester driver was able to save his mower when it came to Kreien. Fire brigades extinguished the fires and thus prevented the flames from spreading further. The exact amount of damage is still unclear.

Just a few days ago, a straw press near Bantin in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district burned down after falling rocks and flying sparks. The damage was estimated at around 100,000 euros.
