Saxony-Anhalt: AfD faction demands commissioning of Nord Stream 2

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – Against the background of rising gas prices, the AfD parliamentary group has spoken out in favor of talks on the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline. “German arms deliveries to Ukraine must be stopped and negotiations with Russia to commission Nord Stream 2 must be started immediately,” said energy policy spokesman Jan Moldenhauer on Tuesday. The federal government must pursue an energy and foreign policy “that serves German interests”. Moldenhauer warned of high burdens for families and companies due to rising gas prices.

For Germany, Nord Stream 1 is the main supply pipeline with Russian gas. Nord Stream 2 was built to bring even more Russian gas to Germany. However, after the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the pipeline did not go into operation as planned. Annual maintenance work on Nord Stream 1, which usually lasts ten days, begins on July 11. Then no gas flows through there. Concern was recently expressed in politics that Russia might not be able to turn on the gas tap again after the maintenance.
