Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) – With a so-called shock call, fraudsters stole money and gold worth a total of 56,000 euros from a woman in Neubrandenburg. A caller told the 58-year-old that her daughter had caused a serious traffic accident, a police spokeswoman said on Tuesday. A heavily pregnant woman in the other car was fatally injured so that she lost her unborn baby.
The daughter of the person called is now in custody and can be released on bail. After several phone calls from Monday afternoon, a meeting was later arranged in a parking lot at Neubrandenburg train station. There, the shocked woman handed over 41,000 euros in cash and three gold bars with a total value of 15,000 euros to a man who was probably around 25 years old.
Shortly thereafter, the woman had her first doubts. She called her daughter – and the case was discovered. Investigators are hoping for witnesses who may have observed the meeting, which took place not far from the police station.
