Schwerin (dpa / mv) – The board of the controversial climate foundation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to resign in the coming weeks. The outstanding certificate from the auditor for 2022 is ready and will be checked, said foundation board member Erwin Sellering (SPD) on Tuesday at a press conference in Schwerin.
The three-member board of directors had already announced in May 2022 that they would resign once the foundation’s business operations had been completed. The ancillary operation had supported the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, with which impending US sanctions were to be overturned.
The foundation has been criticized since its inception in early 2021. The construction of Nord Stream 2 was completed, but it did not go into operation because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
Sellering emphasized again on Tuesday that he believes that the desired liquidation of the foundation after the start of the war of aggression violates applicable law. Addressing the country and the successor board, he said: “Please don’t do that, don’t get involved in illegal activities”.
According to the statements, the chosen legal form stands in the way of a dissolution, and a state parliament resolution will not change that. The former prime minister instead urged the country’s politicians to clarify their relationship with the law.
