The State Attorney General (FGE), Álvaro García Ortiz, has denounced “pressure” and “insinuations” in the ‘Mediator case’ while supporting the “impeccable” work of the prosecutor in charge of this plot, Jaime Serrano-Jover, presumably headed by former socialist deputy Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo.
“My main function is to defend the work of my colleagues. A complicated job, subject to many pressures, subject to many insinuations. I would almost dare to use the word insidiously. Subject to a direct request from a public forum to imprison a person”, García Ortiz claimed in an interview this Wednesday on TVE, collected by Europa Press.
The attorney general has stressed the “exceptional” nature of the provisional admission to prison. “I don’t know if we get the idea of ??what it means to get on a public platform, have an exceptional media space and ask that a person be put in prison”, he has slipped.
When asked why the Prosecutor’s Office has rejected the imprisonment of one of the alleged ringleaders of the plot, García Ortiz has defended that the parameters he has used are “legal, jurisprudential and guarantees of law”, for which he has insisted in that “neither the functions of the sentence, nor the hypothetical amount of the sentence to be imposed justified the provisional detention”, he stressed.
In this regard, the State Attorney General wanted to highlight the feelings of prosecutors who are “surprised” to be “always in the field of suspicion.” “We are guided by professional criteria. There are things that are debatable and we are within the opinion, but our job is to move within the parameters of the law,” he has claimed.
On another point, in relation to the reform of the ‘only yes is yes’ law promoted by the socialist wing of the coalition government and when the Supreme Court will establish doctrine, García Ortiz has defended that Justice has its time and will be the Court Supreme who makes “their decisions and agrees”.
“The calendar of the Supreme Court must be set by the Supreme Court. There is no body that should have more independence. They are excellent professionals and will do their job with the responsibility that corresponds to them,” he added.
