A funny reason pushed Caroline van der Plas to give up the exercise of power, according to De Telegraaf, an article spotted by Le Parisien. His party, the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), is the big favorite in the November 2022 legislative elections. A May poll gave the rural and eurosceptic movement nearly 34% of the vote, a notable lead over the Popular Party for Freedom and democracy (VVD, right-wing). The lights are therefore all green for this 56-year-old woman, founder of the BBB in 2020 and elected MP in 2021 (despite her party’s meager score at the national level, 1%).
Over the past year, the BBB has imposed itself on the Dutch political spectrum, notably winning the provincial elections in March, bringing in sixteen senators, six more than Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister. A head of government who has resigned since July 7, a position that Caroline van der Plas could logically be eyeing. But in an interview, the candidate announced in a surprising way that she would not take the head of the government in the event of victory of the BBB in November.
The first reason given is a possible “invasion” of his privacy. Then a political argument is also given, the BBB candidate not considering herself experienced enough for such a difficult position. But very quickly, another more surprising reason arises. “I have absolutely no desire to have to dress up and fly around the world. Also, I should wear heels, when I can’t walk in heels at all. This all confuses me a bit, to be honest. »
For the time being, Caroline van der Plas would prefer to keep the head of the BBB parliamentary group. As for the future Prime Minister, the founder of the rural party wants a personality of international stature. “If he or she says yes, the choice will be simple for me: I will not become prime minister,” she explains. He now has less than four months to find this rare pearl.
