Duisburg (dpa / lnw) – A 79-year-old was cheated of her jewelry in Duisburg by a so-called shock call. The elderly woman received a phone call on Saturday afternoon from unknown persons posing as police officers, police said. They informed the unsuspecting woman that her daughter had caused a serious traffic accident. The daughter could only avoid imprisonment by paying a substantial sum of money. As an alternative, a kilogram of jewelry is also accepted, the callers said, according to the police report.

The insecure senior citizen fell for the scam and gave an unknown woman the jewelry worth a four-digit amount in front of her apartment. Police reiterated that “payment of money or valuables to avoid detention of a person will never be requested by the police.”
