Coesfeld (dpa / lnw) – A transporter loaded with 160 pigs overturned on a country road near Lüdinghausen in the Coesfeld district on Thursday afternoon. 34 animals died, another 18 were injured so badly that they had to be killed, the police said.

The 23-year-old driver of the van was reportedly injured in the accident and tested positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines in a drug test.

The uninjured animals were transferred to a replacement transporter. With two drones, the fire brigade searched for seven pigs that had fled. Four hours after the accident, all the animals were recaptured.
