Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently embarked on an official visit to Brazil, the largest country in South America, to attend the Group of 20 (G20) Summit 2024 as Malaysia’s guest country. This significant event brings together 19 countries and two unions to discuss global economic issues and policies.

Upon his arrival in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Anwar was warmly welcomed by Brazilian officials, including the Deputy Commander Lieutenant Colonel Buch Itamaraty and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Councillor Orlando Timponi. The Malaysian delegation accompanying the Prime Minister includes Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, along with other senior government officials.

During the G20 Leaders’ Summit, Prime Minister Anwar is set to address Malaysia’s stance on critical topics such as the “Fight Against Hunger and Poverty” and the “Reform of Global Governance Institutions.” Additionally, he will engage in discussions with leaders from various G20 countries to explore both bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.

Brazil holds the G20 Presidency and Malaysia’s participation in the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) and the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB) underlines the country’s commitment to global sustainability efforts. The visit aims to strengthen ties between Malaysia and Brazil, particularly in trade, investment, and the semiconductor industry.

Rio de Janeiro, known for its stunning beaches, iconic landmarks like Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain, and vibrant cultural scene, provides a picturesque backdrop for diplomatic engagements. The city’s diverse favelas and the world-famous Carnaval festival add to its unique charm and appeal.

In 2023, Brazil emerged as Malaysia’s 20th largest trading partner, highlighting the economic significance of their relationship. As Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in Latin America and the Caribbean, Brazil plays a crucial role in the region’s trade dynamics.
