Wales’ largest renewable energy generator, RWE, has recently put forward plans to construct a six-turbine wind farm that could potentially produce enough energy to power around 50,000 homes. The proposed Abertillery Wind Farm is expected to have a capacity of approximately 36 MW, with each turbine reaching a maximum height of 200m.
If the project is given the green light, it will be situated between Abertillery and Abersychan, crossing over the local authority boundaries of Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen County Borough Councils.
Extensive Consultation
Prior to submitting their plans, RWE engaged in thorough consultations with current land users, nearby residents, local authorities, as well as statutory and non-statutory stakeholders. Detailed assessments were conducted to evaluate the impact on the local ecosystem, wildlife, visual aesthetics, noise levels, and other environmental factors.
In addition to discussing potential community benefits, RWE has been in talks with Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council about the possibility of shared ownership, which could further enhance the advantages for the local community.
Oliver Piper, the Project Manager overseeing the development, expressed gratitude to all those who participated in community events and provided feedback on the proposals. He emphasized that the project has been shaped by years of environmental surveys and consultations, highlighting the potential positive impact the wind farm could have on the community, local businesses, and supply chains.
Future Opportunities
Ellie Fry, Corporate Director of Regeneration and Community Services for Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, described the wind farm project as an exciting opportunity that aligns with the council’s efforts to address the climate crisis. She emphasized that the commercial investment could bring about broader benefits that support the thriving of communities in Blaenau Gwent.
The planning application will be reviewed by Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW), with a final decision expected from the Welsh Ministers in 2025. Given that the proposed site largely falls within registered common land, RWE will need to seek separate consents from the Welsh Ministers to proceed with development on common land.

Supporting Our Nation
In conclusion, the proposed wind farm project presents an opportunity to advance renewable energy generation in Wales and contribute to the goal of meeting 100% of electricity consumption from renewables by 2035. By supporting initiatives like this, individuals can play a role in promoting sustainable energy practices and environmental stewardship within their community. Let’s work together to build a cleaner and greener future for Wales.
