Retirees and future retirees have had a difficult year with the implementation of the pension reform. Since September 1, 2023, the legal retirement age has been pushed back to 64 years compared to 62 years initially planned. At the same time, the insurance period was increased to 43 years, which greatly aroused anger among retirees in the midst of a period of inflation. While the purchasing power of retirees has been reduced, here is the amount of a comfortable pension for a single person.
The transition from a salary to a retirement pension can be an unpleasant surprise. For many retirees, it is therefore a loss of resources, which can be difficult to live with in a context of inflation. It must be said that recent economic developments have not allowed retirees to regain significant purchasing power with retirement pensions that are struggling to reach a sufficient threshold.
With the increasing cost of living, retirees are currently experiencing a difficult financial situation. Remember that the amount of the retirement pension in France varies depending on the pension plan and the individual situation of the retiree. In the situation now in place, the French put forward, for their part, a necessary figure of 2,600 euros of gross pension to have a peaceful retirement. This amount is not in agreement with that proposed by the Institute of Economic and Social Research (IRES).
To live a comfortable retirement, the Institute of Economic and Social Research (IRES) is considering, for its part, the sum of 1,634 euros. Established as part of a study, this amount takes into account the money necessary to meet basic needs and participate in social life thanks to an adequate monthly income.
As our colleagues from Pleine Vie explain, according to IRES, an amount of 1,634 euros “would be sufficient for a retiree living alone to be able to cover their most important expenses”. Among these expenses are food, transportation, health care, but also housing.
In the context of this study, however, the IRES estimated that the cost of housing did not really appear there. He thus assumed that retirees already owned their homes, which is not the case in the latest data recorded on the daily lives of retirees.
Many retirees are impatiently awaiting the future increase in pensions. As a reminder, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, declared, on September 27, 2023, that pensions would be increased. This increase should, however, only apply to the basic pension.
