Köthen (dpa/sa) – According to initial information, damage of around one million euros occurred in a fire in a former malt factory in Köthen (Anhalt-Bitterfeld district). The fire broke out on Monday afternoon and has still not been completely extinguished, the police said on Tuesday. More than 150 firefighters fought the flames at the peak of the fire. Nobody got hurt.
In order to be able to transport water to the burning factory, surrounding roads were closed for several hours on Monday. Because of the extreme smoke development, the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld had meanwhile issued a disaster warning and asked citizens to close windows and doors. The cause of the fire is still unclear at this time. According to the police, it will be determined as soon as the factory is cleared and accessible.
