More than 100 firefighters are trying to put out a violent fire in a seven-storey building in Sydney on Thursday, which is spreading to other buildings, according to the emergency services.
“The building is in the process of collapsing, as the blaze begins to spread to several nearby buildings, including residential (buildings),” firefighters from the Australian state of New South Wales said in a statement. .
Twenty fire engines and more than 100 firefighters have been mobilized to “contain and extinguish the blaze” at the building on Randle Street, near Sydney Central Station, the emergency services said.
At least one nearby vehicle was destroyed in the blaze, they added.
“The public is asked to avoid the area while firefighting operations continue,” the fire department said.
Footage circulating on social media shows flames rising into the sky as high as the building itself, as well as thick smoke billowing from it.
