It doesn’t work without the will of the citizens – this is possibly the most important lesson from more than two years of pandemic. Corona measures only work if enough people find them so understandable and appropriate that they voluntarily decide to comply. And not for fear of sanctions.

The reasonably fitting mask is a prime example. Ultimately, said the virologist Hendrik Streeck at the presentation of the evaluation by the Council of Experts at the beginning of the month, in terms of effectiveness, it depends on whether the mask wearer also wants to wear the mask. “Because otherwise the mask has no effect,” says Streeck.

When the traffic light coalition partners develop a new infection protection law in the coming weeks, they should base their corona compass on this lesson. This means: You have to place more trust in the citizen under the conditions of Omikron and make personal responsibility the new standard for your pandemic management.

Also means: Masks are not mandatory outside of medical facilities, but at best a recommendation. No 2G or 3G, but a request to be tested before major events. Whether vaccinated or not.

However, one should also recognize that such a step requires courage on the part of the government. Political leaders were often criticized for a lack of preparation and for reacting too late. Who wants to be accused of doing nothing? Nevertheless, it is right that those in government give up some control.

And it’s about time. Society has been practicing risk assessment for two and a half years: Is Covid particularly dangerous for me? How well am I immunized? Is cutting down social contacts more damaging to my health than getting Long Covid? Should I schedule my visit to grandma for the day before going to the club? And get tested if I have symptoms and not go to the supermarket without a mask?

Anyone who argues that freedom of individual choice only leads to people behaving recklessly and selfishly reveals a pitiful view of humanity. And ignores the fact that the vast majority of citizens weigh up and take care of each other.

Under no circumstances will society degenerate into a conglomerate of ruthless individuals without severe state intervention. But you have to give her the chance to prove it.
