Erfurt (dpa/th) – There are more and more cars with alternative drives such as electric or hybrid engines on Thuringia’s roads. Of a total of 47,804 passenger cars newly registered last year, 17,773 were equipped with alternative drives, as reported by the State Statistical Office on Tuesday. That was an increase of 50 percent compared to the previous year. Their share of new registrations rose from 20.9 percent in 2020 to 37.2 percent.
According to the statisticians, hybrid drives reported the strongest absolute growth among passenger cars. Here, demand increased by 39.3 percent to 12,516 vehicles in 2021. This means that even more cars with hybrid drives than diesel cars have been newly registered. Cars with electric motors also recorded significant growth; here the number increased by 2343 to 4966.
According to the announcement, however, the number of registrations for petrol engines fell significantly. 20,062 cars were newly registered in this segment, 9,667 fewer than in the same period of the previous year.
