The Venezuelan opposition denounced on Saturday March 23 a “blockage” on the website of the electoral authority, which prevents it from appointing Corina Yoris, designated as María Corina Machado’s replacement to face President Nicolás Maduro in the elections on 28 July.
The Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD), which brings together the main opposition parties, claims to have been unable to connect to the special page of the National Electoral Council (CNE), the user name and password which gave it been assigned not working.
“More than 54 hours have passed since the start of the application period without being able to access the nomination system of Dr. Corina Yoris,” the PUD declared on the X network. “Nothing and no one has told us will move away from the electoral path to achieve change for Venezuela with the strength of the majority vote,” he said.
The favorite of the polls deprived of election
Ms. Machado, a favorite in the polls, was nominated as the PUD candidate after winning the primaries in October. However, she was stripped of her right to hold public office for fifteen years and on Friday appointed Corina Yoris, an 80-year-old philosopher and university professor, to replace her.
President Maduro, who is seeking a third term, has not yet presented the candidacy of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), although other organizations in his alliance have already done so.
