2024 Q3 DDoS Threat Report: Trends and Analysis

Cloudflare released its 19th DDoS Threat Report, focusing on the third quarter of 2024. The report highlights a significant increase in DDoS attacks compared to previous quarters, with Cloudflare mitigating nearly 6 million attacks, a 49% increase QoQ and 55% increase YoY.

Out of the total attacks, over 200 hyper-volumetric DDoS attacks exceeding rates of 3 terabits per second (Tbps) and 2 billion packets per second (Bpps) were detected and mitigated by Cloudflare. The largest attack peaked at 4.2 Tbps, lasting just a minute.

The Banking & Financial Services industry was the most targeted sector, with China being the most targeted country and Indonesia as the largest source of DDoS attacks.

Cloudflare’s autonomous DDoS defense systems detected and mitigated a total of 14.5 million DDoS attacks in the first three quarters of 2024, with an average of around 2,200 attacks per hour. The report also highlights an increase in SSDP amplification attacks in Q3, emphasizing the importance of DDoS mitigation strategies.

When it comes to HTTP DDoS attacks, 72% were launched by known botnets, showcasing the importance of robust defenses against such attacks. The report also delves into the user agents used in DDoS attacks, with Google Chrome being the most common user agent observed.

In terms of attack vectors, SYN flood attacks were the top network-layer attack vector, followed by DNS flood attacks, UDP floods, SSDP reflection attacks, and ICMP reflection attacks.
