BAE Systems has recently shared exciting news regarding the integration of the Mk 45 naval gun system onto the upcoming HMS Glasgow, the first Type 26 frigate in a series of eight being constructed for the Royal Navy. This marks a significant milestone for the program, as it is the first time the Mk 45 and its ammunition handling system (AHS) are being installed on a Type 26 frigate.

The addition of the Mk 45 AHS to HMS Glasgow is crucial in establishing a strong foundation of firepower and ammunition readiness for the Royal Navy’s advanced Type 26 frigates. According to Brent Butcher, the vice president of weapon systems at BAE Systems, this installation is a vital step in ensuring that these frigates have the cutting-edge capabilities required for modern maritime operations.

The Mk 45 gun system is a powerful combination of the five-inch (127 mm), 62-calibre Mk 45 Mod 4A naval gun and a fully automated AHS. This system is designed to reload the gun in all sea states, enhancing sailor safety, reducing crewing requirements, and ensuring reliable reloading performance. The Mk 45 AHS is capable of managing all five-inch munitions currently in use, providing versatility and efficiency in combat situations.

BAE Systems was awarded a significant contract worth USD 219 million (EUR 197 million) in February 2023 to equip the next batch of Type 26 frigates for the Royal Navy with the Mk 45 gun system and AHS. This cutting-edge technology has also been chosen by the Royal Australian Navy for its Hunter-class frigates, which are modeled after the Type 26 design.

The engineering and program support for this project are being carried out at BAE Systems’ facilities in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with production taking place at a site in Louisville, Kentucky. The integration of the Mk 45 naval gun system onto the HMS Glasgow marks a crucial step forward in enhancing the naval capabilities of the Royal Navy and its allies.

As the future HMS Glasgow continues its journey to the Scotstoun shipyard after a successful float on the Clyde, the installation of the Mk 45 gun system signifies a significant advancement in the development of these state-of-the-art Type 26 frigates. This integration not only enhances the firepower and ammunition readiness of the Royal Navy’s fleet but also demonstrates the commitment to providing advanced capabilities for European security and defense.
