Big Carl, the massive crane with a lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes, successfully completed its final lift at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in the UK. The crane, operated by Sarens, was used to lower a 423-tonne steel ring into place at the construction project.
This steel ring, which is 47 meters in diameter and 11.6 meters tall, is a crucial component of the inner containment wall of the second reactor building at the power station. It is the third and final steel liner element to be installed on the site. The ring will be encased in two layers of concrete to ensure the safety and stability of the reactor building.
In addition to serving as part of the inner containment wall, the steel ring also includes mountings for the rotating polar crane that will be used for refuelling the reactor. The polar crane plays a vital role in the maintenance and operation of the reactor once it is operational.
Looking ahead, the next major milestone for the construction project is the installation of the steel dome over the building, which is scheduled for 2025. This step was completed on the first reactor building in December 2023, and that building is now ready for the installation of the reactor itself.
Efficiencies in construction
According to a spokesperson for Hinkley Point C, the construction of the second reactor building has benefited from the lessons learned during the construction of the first building. As a result, the second building has achieved efficiencies of between 20 and 30 percent. These efficiencies have helped to streamline the construction process and improve overall project timelines.
