India is taking a unique approach to military space development, focusing on the importance of geospatial technology in defense. Dr. Nithiyanandam from the Takshashila Institution’s Geospatial Research Program shared insights on how India can develop an effective space strategy.

To ensure interoperability between the army, navy, air force, and space organizations, India needs to maximize the use of space-based resources, particularly focusing on downstream applications. Sharing raw data from a central source could be beneficial, especially when multiple services rely on specific electromagnetic spectrums for diverse applications.

The monitoring and mapping of sea and land do not belong to just one service as threats from land, water, and air continue to increase. This underscores the importance of a comprehensive and integrated approach to military space development.

India’s private sector can play a crucial role in advancing the military space program by expanding remote sensing capabilities, launching constellations, and building larger satellites. Encouraging innovation and exploring new applications of space-based technology in dual-use technology applications can further bolster the nation’s space capabilities.

Emerging technologies like AI and ML have the potential to enhance national security efforts by improving preparedness, surveillance, and counteraction against potential threats. However, it is essential to understand when and how to apply these technologies effectively, as not all applications require AI and ML for information extraction.

Integrating geospatial technologies into existing military and intelligence frameworks can help in understanding national security risks more comprehensively. Building capacity among different agencies and stakeholders in the national security domain will create awareness about the potential applications of geospatial technology and reduce the workforce and costs currently involved in security operations.

It is crucial to recognize that geospatial technology goes beyond traditional map interpretation and cartography. It requires a spatial thinking approach and utilization of open-source information available in the domain. By expanding the knowledge and application of geospatial technology among defense personnel, India can enhance its national security framework and effectively mitigate security risks.
