Dutch company Jan De Nul Group is making strides in sustainable technology by investing in a new plug-in hybrid trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD). The company has partnered with Indian shipbuilder Goa Shipyard for the construction of this innovative vessel. The new TSHD is specifically designed to operate in small harbors and will be the smallest in Jan De Nul Group’s hopper fleet, with a hopper capacity of 2,000 cubic meters.

This new vessel, with a hull length of 79 meters, is equipped with ULEv-technology (Ultra Low Emission vessel) and is a DC hybrid plug-in, making it highly innovative and environmentally friendly. According to Jan Van De Velde, Director New Building at Jan De Nul Group, this small hopper has big capabilities and is tailor-made to perform in small harbors. It is agile, flexible, and aims to reduce the company’s carbon footprint significantly.

The contract for the construction of this vessel includes the option to build a second sister vessel, with a delivery period of 24 months for the first ship. Jan De Nul Group is committed to sustainability and sees this new vessel as a valuable addition to its versatile fleet. The vessel is custom-made to operate in small harbors located in highly populated areas, such as marinas. It is designed to be highly maneuverable, emit very low emissions, and operate quietly.

In today’s world, where environmental concerns are becoming increasingly important, companies like Jan De Nul Group are leading the way in adopting sustainable technologies. By investing in innovative vessels like this plug-in hybrid hopper dredger, the company is setting a new standard for environmentally friendly operations in the maritime industry. This not only benefits the company itself but also contributes to the overall goal of reducing carbon emissions and protecting the planet.

As the demand for dredging and marine services continues to grow, it is essential for companies to prioritize sustainability in their operations. Jan De Nul Group’s investment in this new vessel highlights the importance of incorporating eco-friendly technologies into the maritime sector. With the construction of this plug-in hybrid hopper dredger, the company is taking a significant step towards a cleaner and greener future for the industry.
