In addition to the C5 X, Citroën will also come around the corner with a more compact C4 X in the future. This is an extended C4 derivative. In Germany, the youngest French is offered exclusively with electric drive, as the Citroën ë-C4 X.
Citroën is expanding the range in the compact class with the C4 X. However, it is not an all-wheel drive or off-road version, as the “X” of the newcomer suggests, but a 24 centimeters longer version of the C4. It comes to dealers at a price of 37,540 euros (without subsidy) with a 100 kW/136 hp electric motor. This is the well-known drive train with a 50 kWh battery and up to 100 kW charging capacity.
The C4 X, with its rear lights based on the C5 X, has an elegant appearance and is intended to appeal to people who generally have a heart for sedans. But it is the cool version of a sedan, hovering a little higher above the ground, with striking blue color accents and chic 18-inch alloy wheels. Compared to any combination editions in the segment, the Frenchman is not necessarily behind in terms of practicality. The rear seats can also be folded down, then up to 1360 liters of cargo space are available. With full seating it is 510 liters.
The 4.60 meter long C4 X offers a lot of legroom, especially in the second row, although the wheelbase has not been extended. Overall, the C4 X makes a more solid impression than the base. The lifestyle sedan is bouncy, and even impresses with its gentle oscillation when driving over long-frequency waves, which are mainly found on the motorway.
The technicians have also given the king-size compact the “Citroën Advanced Comfort” suspension, which offers two hydraulic stops instead of one mechanical stop. This leads to a longer spring deflection and filters out bumps in the road more effectively. However, it is also a question of voting. While sporty brands tend to come around the corner with a tighter focus, Citroën focuses entirely on comfort. Mission accomplished, especially with the suspension.
A second catch with the C4 X is certainly its improved infotainment. A fast-reacting touchscreen spoils you with convenient operation. And if you don’t feel like familiarizing yourself with the brand’s own menu structures, you can simply use the smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay or Android Auto) to mirror the familiar interface of your own end device on the vehicle monitor. With the “My Citroën” app, parameters such as charge status and range can be called up remotely. In addition, charging times can be programmed and the pre-air conditioning can be planned.
Not quite as comfortable is that the Frenchman needs a while until his battery is charged from 0 to 80 percent – namely half an hour according to the manufacturer. With a full battery, around 360 kilometers can be covered, which the range display of the test car also confirmed at an outside temperature of just under ten degrees Celsius. However, the range forecast for various Group vehicles with the 100 kW train has repeatedly proven to be too progressive, especially in cooler weather conditions. Further test drives will have to clarify whether this is the same with the C4 X.
For those buyers who plan to stay longer in the comfortable seat, Citroën has a massage function in its quiver. It costs 950 euros extra and is only available for the highest equipment line. But then there really isn’t more comfort. After all, that’s the most important thing at Citroën.
