Rio Tinto has extended its agreement with Palantir Technologies Inc for an additional four years, ensuring continued access to the Palantir Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP). By utilizing Palantir Foundry, Rio Tinto has set the stage for implementing AI solutions through the development of a digital twin known as an Ontology. This Ontology will allow Rio Tinto to create, test, and validate AI use cases more quickly and deploy them safely for various operational workflows.

The AI use cases implemented will enhance Rio Tinto’s operational processes, such as managing plant operations, monitoring geotechnical risks, and coordinating driverless trains transporting iron ore. Palantir Foundry serves as a central source of truth, enabling informed decision-making and effective actions based on real-time data.

Rio Tinto’s Chief Commercial Officer, Bold Bataar, expressed how Foundry has transformed their business operations, empowering employees to work more efficiently, enhance asset management, boost performance, and drive innovation. The structured data accessible through Foundry’s Ontology, combined with AIP handling unstructured data, allows Rio Tinto to address complex challenges with agility.

In Western Australia, Foundry provides network specialists with insights into rail operations, enabling them to coordinate the movement of driverless trains carrying iron ore. This has led to improvements in railway throughput and safety. Similarly, in Mongolia, Foundry helps manage geotechnical risks at the Oyu Tolgoi mine, enhancing safety measures and optimizing production.

Palantir’s Head of Commercial, Ted Mabrey, commended Rio Tinto’s use of Foundry and their commitment to leveraging AI solutions securely. The Ontology developed by Rio Tinto in Foundry has paved the way for quick deployment of AI solutions, particularly in risk identification, asset management, and supply chain processes.

The collaboration between Rio Tinto and Palantir Technologies highlights the benefits of integrating AI in mining operations. By harnessing the power of AI through platforms like Foundry and AIP, companies can streamline processes, improve safety measures, and drive innovation in the mining industry. This partnership sets a precedent for how advanced technologies can revolutionize traditional sectors and pave the way for a more efficient and sustainable future in mining.
