Von Maur, a family-owned department store chain, has recently opened its first location in Pennsylvania at the South Hills Village mall in Pittsburgh. The company’s new store, spanning 118,000 square feet across two levels, is now an anchor tenant at the mall, offering a wide range of high-quality fashion and home goods.
Customers can expect to find brand-name and specialty apparel, shoes, accessories, and gifts from renowned brands such as Bobbi Brown, Rhone, Vuori, Peter Millar, and more. Von Maur has also expanded its offerings by including L.L. Bean through a new wholesale partnership, catering to the diverse preferences of its customers.
Jim von Maur, the president and fourth-generation leader of the company, expressed enthusiasm about entering the Pittsburgh market, emphasizing the importance of values like hard work, loyalty, and exceptional service. The new store has hired over 100 full- and part-time associates to provide a seamless shopping experience for customers.
In addition to its merchandise selection, Von Maur is known for its exceptional customer service, complimentary gift wrapping and shipping, rewards program, and interest-free charge card. The company’s commitment to customer satisfaction sets it apart in the retail industry, making it a preferred shopping destination for many.
The opening of the Pittsburgh store is part of Von Maur’s national growth strategy, with plans to expand further into North Dakota in 2025. The company aims to have 39 department stores nationwide, investing $100 million in renovating its existing locations over the next five years to enhance the overall shopping experience.
While Von Maur pursues expansion, other department store chains are facing challenges in sales growth, prompting strategic changes in their operations. Retail giants like Macy’s and J.C. Penney are reevaluating their store footprints and investing in revamping their offerings to stay competitive in the evolving retail landscape.
Analysts predict that the off-price sector, led by companies like Burlington, TJX, and Ross, will continue to gain market share from traditional department stores in the near future. This shift is prompting retailers like Nordstrom to prioritize off-price concepts over the traditional department store format to meet changing consumer preferences and shopping behaviors.
