LAWRENCE — Rider University is holding a symposium this week on fake news and responsible citizenship.
The event comes at a time when President Trump has repeatedly suggested that any negative coverage of his administration is fake.
The symposium will provide historical and political context for understanding fake, misleading and highly ideological news. Speakers will discuss the political conditions that lead to the proliferation of fake news and the ensuing consequences and what distinguishes fake and misleading news from responsible and reliable news gathering.
Library faculty will also provide concrete tools to recognize fake news and fact check media sources.
The event is from 6 to 8 p.m. March 1 in the Fireside Lounge in the Bart Luedeke Center on Rider’s Lawrence campus. It is free and open to the public and no pre-registration is required.
The event is being co-presented by Rider’s libraries, political science department and communication and journalism department.
