A Holywood home has been selected as the first finalist in the competition to be named Northern Ireland’s House of the Year. Melmore House, a beautifully restored 1850s villa in Co Down, was announced as the first home to secure a place in the grand final. Originally built in 1855, the house belonged to former Chief Constable Sir Graham Shillington but is now owned by Fiona, Jonathan, and their three children.
The location of Melmore House, overlooking Belfast Lough, was a key factor in the couple’s decision to purchase the property. After years of being on and off the market, Fiona finally got her chance to make it their home. However, when they first entered the house, they found it in a state of disrepair due to dry rot, wet rot, and dampness. The couple decided to completely renovate the home to make the most of its stunning views.
The entrance to Melmore House features stained glass windows leading into a hallway, with sliding doors opening up to a spacious dining and kitchen area. Fiona and Jonathan transformed the original servant’s quarters into a cinema room and a second kitchen. The downstairs area also includes a children’s playroom, bathroom, and utility room. Upstairs, there are five bedrooms and three bathrooms spread over two levels, including a master bedroom with a balcony overlooking Belfast Lough.
The renovation of Melmore House took 16 months to complete, during which there were moments of doubt and nervousness. Fiona and Jonathan had to deal with significant structural issues, with parts of the house almost completely demolished. Despite the challenges, the couple’s design choices were praised by the competition’s judges. Fiona aimed for a blend of old and new styles, with a focus on colorful and modern furniture to create a vibrant family home.
Melmore House is the first of five finalists in the House of the Year grand final. Fiona and Jonathan are thrilled to be recognized for their hard work and creativity, and they hope that their home will ultimately be crowned the champion. The journey of Melmore House and its transformation will continue to be featured on House Of The Year, airing on September 30 at 8pm on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer.
