The jackpot in the US lottery Powerball swells to an increasingly fantastic size: there are now almost two billion US dollars to be won. The operator speaks of the largest jackpot in the world. However, the chances of a profit for the individual are negligible.
In the US, the record jackpot of the Powerball lottery has swelled again and is now at 1.9 billion dollars (1.91 billion euros). The jackpot was not cracked again in the drawing on Saturday and thus grew by another $ 300 million, as the lottery operator announced. The next drawing will take place on Monday.
The jackpot has grown steadily since there was last a winner in early August. Since then, no player has managed to pick six correct numbers in 40 draws. Before Saturday’s drawing, the jackpot had already risen to $1.6 billion – making it the “biggest lottery prize ever offered in the world,” according to the operators.
In January 2016, three Powerball players shared the world’s largest jackpot in history, amounting to $1.586 billion. The second highest jackpot – and the highest won by a single player – was worth $1.537 billion and was hit in October 2018 on the Mega Millions lottery.
Powerball lottery tickets cost two dollars and are sold in 45 US states as well as the metropolitan area of ??Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The chance of hitting the jackpot is about one in 292 million. For comparison, the risk of being struck by lightning in the United States is about one in a million.
