David Joseph has decided to resign as the chairman and CEO of Universal Music UK after nearly 17 years of service. He joined the company in 1998 as the general manager of Polydor and was later promoted to lead the entire UK and Ireland division in 2008. Joseph announced his departure in a memo to staff, revealing his plans to pursue a master’s degree in religion and theology at King’s College London.
Throughout his career, Joseph has overseen various labels under Universal Music UK, including EMI, Decca, Island, Polydor, and 0207 Def Jam, as well as Abbey Road Studios. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work in the music industry and highlighted the importance of creating a company that prioritizes creativity and heart.
Joseph received praise from his colleagues, including Universal Music chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, who commended Joseph for his authenticity and leadership. Following Joseph’s departure, Universal Music UK underwent restructuring, merging Island and EMI label divisions and creating new frontline label groups. This restructuring aims to streamline operations and support artists more effectively. Additionally, a new Audience and Media Division will be launched to further enhance artist and label support.
