Robert Guy, a talented 36-year-old conductor from Wrexham, is making his mark in the music world by landing his dream job as the conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Overcoming childhood deafness, Robert’s journey to success is truly inspiring. After undergoing operations to restore his hearing, he has excelled in his career as a conductor, educator, and entrepreneur.

Robert, along with his composer brother Jonathan, co-founded NEW Sinfonia, the resident orchestra at the North Wales International Music Festival in St Asaph. The orchestra also has strong ties with the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. Additionally, NEW Sinfonia runs a community vocal ensemble called NEW Voices and an education program called NEW Academi.

Last year, Robert was honored with the prestigious Hilary Tann Award for his exceptional contributions to Welsh classical music. Renowned composer Paul Mealor hailed him as one of the UK’s finest young conductors. Robert’s appointment as the Principal Conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is a significant milestone in his career.

The Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra offers young musicians the chance to perform alongside world-class soloists and conductors at the iconic Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Members of the orchestra will have the opportunity to play alongside the senior Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at a concert in November and participate in workshops to enhance their musical skills.

Robert’s deep-rooted connection with music began when he worked as a viola player with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in his early professional career. He also served as the Director of Ensembles at the University of Manchester and led their acclaimed Conducting Program.

Expressing his excitement about his new role, Robert said, “It is a great honor to have been appointed Principal Conductor to the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Sir Simon Rattle is a musical giant and one of my heroes, so this opportunity truly is a dream come true for me. I am dedicated to making classical music accessible to all, and I encourage young people in Liverpool and the North West to audition and be part of this incredible musical journey.”

Michael Eakin OBE, Chief Executive of Liverpool Philharmonic, commended Robert’s appointment, highlighting his passion for music and extensive experience as a conductor and musician. Eakin believes that Robert’s energy and talent will inspire the young musicians of the Youth Orchestra and contribute to the vibrant music scene in the city of Liverpool.

Robert’s appointment signifies a new chapter for the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, as they gear up for their 75th Birthday in 2026. His dedication to music education and his vision for the future of classical music promise an exciting and enriching experience for the young musicians under his baton. Liverpool Philharmonic’s commitment to nurturing young talent and providing musical training to thousands of young people reflects their dedication to fostering the next generation of musicians in the region.
