The Malaysia International Film Festival (Miffest) is set to showcase a diverse range of films from July 21-28. The festival will kick off with the horror film “Indera” by local director Woo Ming Jin, featuring Shaheizy Sam and Azira Shafinaz. The event will wrap up with a double feature of “Love Lies” by Ho Miu Ki and “Peg O’ My Heart” by Nick Cheung.
Among the nine films competing at the festival are “Abang Adik” by Jin Ong, “Betania” by Marcelo Botta, and “Every You Every Me” by Michael Fetter Nathansky, which explores personal identity and is a standout of German cinema. Other entries include “In the Land of Brothers” by Alireza Ghasemi and Raha Amirfazli, “Rapture” by Dominic Sangma, and “Sujo” by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, among others.
The festival will also honor Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu and Indonesian screen legend Christine Hakim with lifetime achievement awards. Additionally, Nick Cheung from Hong Kong will be recognized for his outstanding contributions to film. Moreover, the Malaysia Golden Global Awards nominations have been revealed, with films like “Abang Adik” and “Every You Every Me” each receiving seven nominations.
In other news, EST N8, an international finance, production, and sales company, has appointed Cathy Ni as its new sales executive. Ni brings a wealth of experience from her previous work with Chinese director Han Han and various film groups. Her expertise will enhance the company’s efforts in the Asian market and beyond.
On the theatrical front, Japanese animation series “Dan Da Dan” is set to hit North American theaters through distributor Gkids on Sept. 13. The series, based on Tatsu Yukinobu’s manga, will feature the first three episodes and an interview with key creators. Fans can catch the premiere of the first episode at this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 6.
Meanwhile, the Bollywood film “Baby John,” an adaptation of Atlee’s Tamil-language hit “Theri,” has postponed its release to Dec. 25. Starring Varun Dhawan and Keerthy Suresh in her Bollywood debut, the film promises thrilling VFX and action sequences. With a talented ensemble cast and acclaimed producers on board, “Baby John” is one to watch out for this Christmas.
