British architectural designer John Pawson and Denmark’s leading manufacturer of handcrafted wooden flooring and products, Dinesen, have collaborated on a minimalist furniture collection that celebrates their relationship that spans over 30 years. This collaboration began in 1992 when Pawson used Dinesen’s Douglas fir for the flooring in his home in Notting Hill, London. The planks were laid uncut in one single piece, sparking a successful commission that led to a lasting friendship and business partnership.
The Pawson Furniture Collection for Dinesen is based on the span of one of the brand’s floorboards and consists of the Dining Series and Lounge Series. The designs embody the Danish word umage, meaning to go beyond what is expected or thought possible. Pawson’s approach to the collection reflects his belief in paring back designs to the essence of the material, focusing on the logic and poetry of wood.
The Dining Series includes a dining table, bench, and stool, originally designed by Pawson in 1992. The updated version features a shadow gap detail and combines Douglas fir planks with an insert of Dinesen Oak. The Lounge Series comprises a solid Douglas wood lounge chair, coffee table, sofa, and daybed, crafted by skilled cabinet makers in Denmark and upholstered with Kvadrat textiles.
Thomas Dinesen, fourth generation at Dinesen, acknowledges Pawson’s influence on their perception of wood, transforming it from a restoration material to a design element in modern architecture. The collaboration between Pawson and Dinesen has not only resulted in a stunning furniture collection but has also shifted the way wood is utilized in architectural design.
