For many of us, there are certain movies from the 80s and 90s that we consider classics, and Pretty Woman is definitely one of them. It featured the charming Richard Gere and the rising star Julia Roberts, capturing hearts with its love story. The musical adaptation of this beloved film is currently being showcased at Hanley’s Regent Theatre, promising a dazzling and theatrical experience for all.
As a fan of the original film, I was eager to see how the story would translate to the stage after more than three decades. The plot follows the tale of ruthless businessman Edward Lewis, played by Oliver Savile, who hires the spirited working girl Vivian Ward, portrayed by Rebekah Bryant, as his companion for the week. Despite their initial clashes, love inevitably blooms and changes their lives forever.
Bryant shines as Vivian, embodying the perfect mix of sass and goofiness along with her powerful vocals. Savile charms as Edward, although I found his portrayal of the character to be a bit too ‘nice’ compared to the cutthroat businessman depicted in the film. The addition of Strictly Come Dancing winner Ore Oduba, who plays dual roles, adds a touch of charm and humor to the production.
Natalie Paris and Noah Harrison also deliver standout performances, adding depth and humor to the show. With a score by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, direction by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, and a book by the original movie’s director and screenwriter, Pretty Woman: The Musical boasts an impressive creative team.
The ensemble numbers, set design, and costumes elevate the production, transporting the audience to the glamorous streets of Hollywood and Beverley Hills. While I still have reservations about how the storyline holds up in today’s world, the show offers a delightful blend of stellar performances, captivating vocals, and dazzling dance sequences that make for an entertaining night out.
