Santa Monica Police Uncover Looting Scheme During California Wildfires

Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) recently revealed the identities of nearly a dozen individuals involved in attempted burglaries within Palisades Fire evacuation zones in Santa Monica. Shockingly, none of the suspects were residents of the town, according to police officials. This revelation sheds light on a disturbing trend of looters taking advantage of the chaos and devastation caused by natural disasters.

Suspects with Burglary Tools

Out of the 10 suspects identified, six were found in possession of “burglary tools,” indicating a premeditated plan to commit theft during the crisis. These individuals traveled from out of town to exploit the vulnerable situation created by the wildfires, highlighting the opportunistic nature of their criminal activities.

Arrests in Evacuation Zones

Since the onset of the Palisades Fire, SMPD has arrested a total of 39 people within the evacuation zones. While some suspects were apprehended for attempted burglary, others were charged with offenses such as curfew violations, drug possession, warrants, parole and probation violations, and various other crimes. The sheer number of arrests underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order during times of crisis.

Suspect Profiles

Among the arrested individuals, Joshua Kaliel Love, 29, stood out for his attempt to evade officers while carrying a dagger, window-breaking tool, mask, gloves, and narcotics. Another pair of suspects, Dominic Pachecomanga, 18, and Miguel Angel Dorantes, 22, were caught traveling in a van without identification, equipped with burglary tools, dark clothing, ski masks, and large tote bags. Gabriel Isaih Stokes, 27, was arrested after a plate reader flagged the car he was driving as stolen, leading to the discovery of stolen IDs, burglary tools, and other incriminating items in his possession.

The arrest of these individuals highlights the need for increased vigilance and security measures in disaster-prone areas to prevent opportunistic crimes during times of crisis. It serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to take advantage of vulnerable communities in their time of need.

As we reflect on these events, it is crucial to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement to protect our communities from further harm. Let us stand together in solidarity against those who seek to exploit tragedy for personal gain, ensuring that justice prevails in the face of adversity.
